I want to like this book because, having read it I'm still enthusiastic about learning symfony.

But normally when I read a book like this I feel inclined to try out bits of code as I go - and the layout of this book just isn't conducive to that.

I really don't like the way that the section on "the basics" doesn't even cover database connections, and code generation isn't covered till chapter 14.

The book seems reasonably thorough I'm just not sure who it's aimed at. Maybe it works better as a reference - it just isn't a great getting started guide.

I found some of the translation a little uncertain, and the text a little emphatic at times:

"code with mixed tab and blank indentation is impossible to read"

No it isn't - it's a bit harder in some text editors. This sort of overstatement manages to undermine what is otherwise a strong case for good coding standards.

And why do so many people do such a poor job of selling ORM?

Still there aren't many symfony books out there, and the framework looks, good so buy this book anyway.
